The quickest way to lower your scores and improve your short game is get fit for the proper wedges. In the fitting process here at The Perfect Fit at Raven Golf Club-Phoenix, we execute numerous wedge fittings each week that help players lower their scores immediately! Basically we focus on finding your correct bounce, length of club, lie angle, loft and number of wedges (i.e. gapping) among other variables.

Bounce is probably the most important element of the process as improper bounces can result in shots being hit fat or the dreaded blade shot. We determine bounce by hitting off of a lie board in an outdoor setting. Reading the marks on the bottom of the club, we determine whether you are a slider/sweeper style of player, neutral style player, or a driver/digger style of wedge player. Each one of these types of players will hit wedges in different bounces, the angle between the leading edge of the sole and its lowest point, and determine which wedge performs better to various distances. A properly fit bounce should slide through the turf with ease and the ball should not run up the face on a full or ¾ length shot.

Gapping is the second most important part of the fitting and requires a person to start by hitting a full pitching wedge. We note the carry distance then have you hit your most lofted wedge (typically a 58 to 60 degree wedge). Once we find the wedge with the most loft and proper bounce for your game, we will hit various length shots as we would around the green and recovery shots from various lies we might encounter during our round. We then start the process of filling the yardages between the pitching wedge and the most lofted wedge. Using our FlightScope launch monitor we determine the pitching wedge yardage and the most lofted wedge yardage then “fill the gaps” in 4 to 6 degree increments so yardage gaps between clubs are 10 to 15 yards. We will hit numerous lofted wedges with the recommended bounce, noting yardages with each wedge. All with an aim to create a recommended wedge profile for your game. 

After proper gapping we help you determine the proper lie angle (using tape on the sole of the club and a lie board), determine length by proper posture and shaft selection. We finish off by finding you the proper grip size primarily based on the player’s desires and feel.

If you follow these steps and get these items correct you will be on your way to getting more up and downs and hitting it closer with your wedges.
