The Tucson Deaf Golf Community is really excited to host the National Deaf Golf Championships on June 3-7, 2013 at the Omni Tucson National, the site of past PGA Tucson Open. This is a qualifying biennial event to form a U.S. golf team to represent in the 2014 World Deaf Golf Championships, the first time the national venue takes place anywhere in the American Southwest.

This also marks the first time they carry two independent formats; competitive and recreational to enhance the deaf social interaction.

This venue is open to any interested deaf golfers who must demonstrate their hearing loss of 55 dB or higher through submission of an audiogram form. This along with no hearing aids allowed during play are important requirements to help keep everyone on a level playing field.

How did they do in representing the USA at the international level?  Their men’s team won the team championship 6 out of 8 times. The women’s team recently captured first place in Tsu, Japan and was at top 5 out of 6 times. The Seniors’ team made their 2012 debut in Japan. It remains their patriotic endeavor to carry on the American success thus far.

One major aspiration the Tucson Deaf Community has for this event is the inaugural video media exposure same as the Golf Channel does for mainstream America. The idea is to bring in future deaf talent across the country that would otherwise never know about this awe-inspiring organizational step to represent our country. This has never happened before in the history of their national qualifying tournaments.

Players have to maintain their amateur status. While striving to bring the best prospects is often with limited means, it is always challenging to find means to defray the tournament costs.
