Junior Golf Association of Arizona kicked off 2017 Season at the New Year’s Classic

The 2017 New Year’s Classic teed off January 21-22 at three different courses, Dobson Ranch, Arizona Golf Resort, and ASU Karsten. Hosted by the Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA), the field featured 172 junior golfers – boys and girls in four age groups – from 10 years and younger to 18.

In the Boys Championship Division, Cameron Barzekoff, Mesa, shot a tournament low 68 to top Hayden Sayre (75-71-–146), Phoenix, by five strokes. Barzekoff posted a 2-under-par 141 for 36 holes. J. Carbot Fowler, Phoenix, won the Boys 15-18 Division at 11-over par (78-76—154).  Ethan Klose won the Boys 13-14 Division at 8-over par (78-74—152).  Bryan Beyer took top honors in the Boys 11-12 Division at 3-over par (35-40—75), and Brennan Korn won the Boys 10 and Under Division at 5-over par (38-39—77).   

In the Girls Championship Division, Ashley Menne, Surprise, posted the only two sub-par rounds of the tournament (68-70—138, -5) on the girl’s side to defeat Jenny Bae (74-72–146), Chandler, by eight strokes. Lorel Hayward, Mesa, won in the Girls 15-18 Division at 21-over par (84-80—164). Makenna Cabardo won the Girls 13-14 Division at 17-over par (84-77—161). Paige Hammarstrom won the Girls 11-12 Division at 19-over par (48-43—91), and Seyoung Lee won in the Girls 10 and Under Division at 2-over par (39-35—74).

“We look forward to The New Year’s Classic at the start of every year,” said Scott McNevin, Executive Director of the JGAA. “The new year serves as a clean slate for athletes to build a great season. We are honored to watch young stars continue to grow as we also welcome new players to the field.”
