Longbow Golf Club chosen by Golfweek magazine to host Golfweek’s Junior Series Qualifier September 25-26

Longbow Golf Club was selected to host a qualifying event for Golfweek’s Junior Series, which is composed of the three 36-hole events to be contested at: Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona (September 25-26, 2010); Willowbrook Plantation in Pawleys Island, South Carolina (August 28-29, 2010); and Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Michigan (August 21-22, 2010). The top boys and girls emerging from these three qualifiers will be given an exemption to both the East Coast and West Coast Golfweek Junior Invitational – to be played at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Florida (November 6-7, 2010) and Troon North in Scottsdale, Arizona (January 16-17, 2011) respectively. This is the second year in a row that Longbow was selected to host a Golfweek Junior Series qualifying event.

“Supporting junior golf has always been one of the most important initiatives for us at Longbow Golf Club,” said Jay Larscheid, Director of Golf at Longbow Golf Club. “Not only is it in our business interest to encourage the next generation of customers, the game itself teaches all the right things – honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, courtesy and much more.  We look forward to a great event.”

Longbow is no stranger to competitive junior golf.  In fact, the Winn Grips Heather Farr Classic hosted by Longbow Golf Club has been a mainstay on the American Junior Golf Association’s (AJGA) schedule since 1999 when current PGA TOUR professional and 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open Champion, Hunter Mahan, took home the trophy in the Boys Division. Other notable past champions include reigning 2010 U.S. Women’s Open Champion, Paula Creamer, who notched back-to-back victories in 2003 and 2004; and locals Amanda Blumenherst (2002), Drew Kittleson (2005) Philip Francis (2006), Trey Kaahanui (2008) and Kyung Kim (2008).  In addition to hosting competitive events, Longbow has served as a place for junior golfers to learn the game and hone their skills.  In 2010, Longbow joined with The First Tee of Phoenix to open a satellite facility on-property along with the founding of the OB Sports Golf Academy in the same year.  The latter represents one of the most comprehensive game improvement programs available to junior golfers; and in its relatively short existence, several students have already earned top finishes in AJGA events, appearances in the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open and several golf scholarships to prominent universities.

Golfweek’s Junior Invitational has been recognized by the AJGA. Players who place highly in the Invitational will receive special exemptions from the AJGA. The AJGA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA, the largest association of its kind, has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 50 states and over 30 foreign countries.
