Medal Play Golf Tour grows to 4 markets in 2nd year

The popular Medal Play Golf Tour is on the move. The tour, which provides amateurs the experience of competitive stroke-play golf, will open up the 2011 season in 4 markets. Phoenix, AZ, San Diego and Los Angeles, CA will join the flagship Palm Springs, CA tour which is entering its 2nd season. Each tour will host a 10 event local schedule that kicks off in January, 2011 and finishes in September with the Tour Championship in the Palm Springs area incorporating all 4 tours.

“Now amateurs can play a tour just like the pros, without the travel,” said tour director Blane Freytag “Our events are held locally on weekends, perfect for the average golfer. Our goal is to provide fun, fair, competitive individual stroke play golf tournaments utilizing NET scoring (using your MPGT Tournament Handicap) to level the playing field. Everyone has an equal shot of winning in our tournaments.”  The Medal Play Golf Tour is for amateurs of all ages and abilities. Members are placed in one of seven (7) divisions based on age and handicap. New for 2011 will be a Women’s Division. “We are trying to encourage women to come out and compete and hope to accomplish that by adding a separate women’s division,” noted Freytag.

Tournament format is individual net stroke play, with USGA rules in effect. A software program and web page tracks each player’s tour handicap to ensure participants are placed in their proper flight. Player tour handicaps will be monitored throughout the season to field the most competitive divisions possible. “We have a unique anti-sandbagging system to weed out the baggers,” added Freytag.

At each event, the top golfers in all flights win Visa gift cards from the prize pool that is generated in each division. All participants also earn points toward “Player of the Year” honors in their division. A Fed Ex style playoff covering the final three events adds to the excitement!

Golfers may join the tour at any time for a $100 annual membership fee. Active Duty Military qualify for free membership. “We understand the dynamics of being in the military. Free membership to Active Duty Military is our way of giving back and thanking our military for their service and sacrifice,” commented Freytag. Entry fees for the Medal Play Golf Tour are individually priced based on the venue and time of year. Those fees include green fees, shared use of cart, range balls, prize pool, scoring and trophies. There will also be optional skins games and an optional par 3 cash pot at each event. Trophies will also be up for grabs for the winners of each division.
