Jake Chanen, a 13-year-old junior golfer from Phoenix, AZ., and 16-year-old junior golfer Katie Dunaway from Gilbert were the overall winners in the Men’s and Women’s categories, respectively, at the 1st Annual Arizona Short Course Classic presented by Nike Golf held at Augusta Ranch Golf Club in Mesa.

Chanen shot 4-over par on the par-61 course over 36 holes, good enough to take top honors not only in his age group (Boys 13-14), but in the Men’s overall category as well, edging out Tyler Apps (Men’s Division), who finished 1-shot back at 5-over for the tournament. Kevin Walters (Men’s Division) finished third in the Men’s overall at 6-over par.

Dunaway matched Chanen’s efforts and made it a clean sweep for the Junior contingent, shooting 11-over for the tournament to win her age group (Girls 15-18) and the Women’s overall. Alisa Snyder (Girls 13-14) finished one shot back of Dunaway at 12-over in the Women’s overall, while GraceMarie Schian (Girls 15-18) finished third overall at 15-over par.

The Top-3 finishers in each category were awarded trophies, and Chanen and Dunaway, as the overall winners, were presented with official green jackets by Augusta Ranch Owner and General Manager Don Rea.

While Apps fell short for the Men’s overall, he still came out on top in the Men’s Gross category with his 2-over par finish.  Walters finished second at 6-over, followed by Tanner Wootan in third at 7-over par.

The Women’s Gross came down to a playoff between Janet Hittle and Barbara Lall, and was decided on the second playoff hole. Hittle made par to take the Women’s Gross title, while Lall settled for the runner-up finish. Cindy Morris finished third in the Women’s Gross division.

The 2012 Arizona Short Course Classic featured a 36-hole, individual stroke play competition, with flights broken down into gross and net for men and women, and flights for junior boys and girls in three different age groups – ages 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18.
