Arizona captures 19th annual AZ-UT Shootout 39½ to 32½

Brings trophy back to Arizona to lead series 10–9

Once again, the visiting team proved to be too much for the home competition and their local knowledge as Arizona won the 19th Annual AZ—UT Shootout, 39½ to 32½ at Alpine Country Club, in Highland, Utah.

With the victory, Arizona broke the 9-9 series tie in the Shootout. Ironically, the visiting team has won the last five matches. Although Arizona brought a majority of Shootout “rookies” with Michael Wog II and Cyrus Whitney being the only players to play in the event before, Arizona was lead by a very strong group of players who have had successful years.

Leading the way for team Arizona was 2009 AZ Mid-Amateur Champion Matt Bergstrom, who scored 8 ½ points of out possible nine and Cyrus Whitney who scored seven points. In the Open singles matches on Tuesday, Pat Geare and Jerry Huff swept their matches, 3-0. Michael Wog and Tony Bagneschi posted strong singles victories as well, scoring 2.5 points each. Ashley Smith led the way for the Arizona women, winning her match 3-0.

Arizona was leading the matches 20-16 after the Four-Ball and Foursomes matches on day one. The key to victory was the Arizona domination in the Open Division with a 32-16 advantage.
