Sorenstam honorary chairman of World Golfers Championship

Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam from Sweden, who won 83 times before retiring, has agreed to become the Honorary Chairman for the World Golfers Championship, replacing Seve Ballestros of Spain, who died last year.

The World Golfers Championship, scheduled October 27-November 3 in Kwa Zulu-Natal, South Africa, was created by fellow Swede Sven Tumba, who also died last year.

“One of his dreams was to design a golf tournament to give golfers of varying skill levels the opportunity to represent their country in a first-class, global tournament,” Sorenstam said. “That dream is the World Golfers Championship and it has become the largest amateur championship; it involves thousands of golfers in more than 40 countries and is available to everyone with a registered handicap. The experience of competing against other golfers from so many different countries is, without a doubt, difficult. However, it also is a great way for the amateurs to see first-hand what it can be like playing as a professional.”

Qualifying is currently under way to determine which golfers will advance to the U.S. finals, scheduled September 20-22 at Indiana National Golf Club in Plymouth, Ind.
