Recently at my home course, we underwent a management change.  While these changes bring along all the drama and tension associated with emotional ties to a job, it was with great interest to be an observer of human nature.

Being a Director of Golf and Golf Instructor you learn to be the person who listens first, asks questions second, and makes a decision third. I do not think this is a trait that is unique to Directors of Golf or Managers.

Many employees who had it ”their way” voiced the dismay of change and predicted the collapse of the organization. The golf course would go into shock and the very earth would roll over in an act of vengeance and rebuttal. The others, who were the “grunts” of the world, hoped for better opportunity for themselves. A third type of person is also evident, those who look at change as a fact of life and give the “new people” the chance to prove that what they say can become fact.

In our society today we have this pinpoint perspective on production and performance. How many times do we order a menu item and instead of green beans it comes with carrots and the customer will not give the server a chance…to see what happens? How many times do we stand in a line at the local grocery store or box store and get frustrated with the person ahead in line because they ask questions, have a coupon or decide to return an item?

What does all this have to do with golf? Well, it is IMPOSSIBLE to play anywhere close to your abilities if you arrive in a state of emotional stress. On the drive out to the course drive a little slower, instead of racing to beat the yellow light wait for the next green one. When you get to the course, if the stations on the range are full, chip and putt.  Get to the first tee box relaxed and calm and enjoy the day on the course.

When you are in a good frame of mind this game not only becomes easier it becomes so much more fun. I can promise that the changes that come daily are the opportunities that make us rise above.
