Leaving a Legacy

The Southwest Section of the PGA of America holds an elevated position among its peers across the country. Much like other influential Sections in core golf markets like Florida, Texas, and California, PGA members in Arizona and Nevada are asked to be not just managers of golf operations, but stewards of innovation and shepherds of the next generation of golf leadership.

Over the years Arizona has been home to many of the most respected club professionals not just in our region but throughout the country. From the Bartko twins who respectively led Mesa Country Club and White Mountain Country Club for 3+ decades each, to Duff Lawrence whose work at Desert Highlands in the 80’s literally changed the golf landscape forever, to modern day institutions like Joe Shershenovich at Grayhawk and Dick Hyland at DC Ranch, our state is the proud home of many of the industry’s strongest leaders.

As we enjoy the time of year when the weather is perfect, visitors are among us, and golf’s influence on the state’s economy is most visible, I am particularly proud to be a PGA Master Professional and a Board member of the Southwest Section PGA. As club members and daily fee guests of our many amazing facilities, I hope you too take pride in supporting an industry that not only brings joy to its patrons but also creates careers for people from all walks of life.

On behalf of my fellow golf professionals, please accept my sincere thanks for committing to making the great game of golf part of your life. And as you enjoy your next game among friends and 80 degree temperatures, know that you’re doing your part to help Arizona keeps its position as the premier golf destination in the entire country.

Mark Black was recently recognized by his peers as the 2015 PGA Golf Professional of the Year for the Southwest Section of the PGA of America.
