Go West, Young Man

When people think of golf in the Valley, many minds head straight to the murderer’s row of North Scottsdale. With exceptional offerings from Nicklaus, Fazio, Weiskopf, Mickleson, Jay Morrish, and more, it’s easy to understand why. But more recently much of the new golf mojo is found in Greater Phoenix’s West Valley.

In just the past year, two of the most talked about courses nationally are both from west of the I-17: Grand Canyon Golf Course (formerly Maryvale) at 59th Avenue & Indian School and the vaunted Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club in historic Wickenburg. This comes on the heels of the rave reviews for the renovations at Wigwam Golf Resort. And of course, you also have Quintero, Verrado, Estrella, and my own Trilogy at Vistancia, all of which have been highly regarded for years.

Coming this fall, the new Tom Lehman-designed Victory Course at Verrado will open to what are expected to be rave reviews. (In fact it’s a busy year for our local Ryder Cup captain, as Lehman is also overseeing the renovations currently underway at Verde River Golf & Social Club in the northeast valley, another project expecting national praise when it re-opens in the fall.) Victory is just another addition to what is becoming a hotbed of high quality, reasonably priced championship golf.

As summer returns and brings the mixed blessings of high heat and low prices, I strongly encourage everyone in the Valley to expand beyond the usual rotation. If you live in Peoria or Glendale, take this chance to check out what the East Valley has to offer. And if you have traditionally been firmly planted out east, head out our way and experience courses that have turned the heads of reviewers from Golf, Golf Digest, Golfweek, and more.

Tis’ the season to collect some new bag tags!

Fairways & Greens! Scott.
