Get Your Family Hooked On Golf

I remember it like it was just yesterday. The first time I went to the golf course. It might have been 25 years ago but that 9 hole executive course in Nottingham, England holds some great memories for me. Not exactly St Andrews but for me and my father it was a place that we could bond together for a few hours every week. It was there that I got hooked on golf!

Coming back from this year’s US Open at Congressional Country Club, one thing struck me from the get go – it really was a family atmosphere. Kids of all ages were on hand with their parents to witness history in the making!

Having kids at golf tournaments must be a good sign for golf! It is no secret within our industry that the number of people playing golf is on the decline. Due to the recent economic downturn, we have lost in excess of 1 million golfers nationwide within the last 18-24 months. That is a startling number when you think about it.

To combat this, the PGA of America realizes that the future of the game lies in the younger generation. It has put together a number of national programs to attract newcomers and people back to the game of golf. July is the PGA “Family Golf Month”. During July, golf courses throughout Arizona will be offering a series of programs for you to learn and play golf as a family. The program includes: Family Golf Clinics, Family Golf Day, and Bring Your Kids to the Range Day, just to mention a few.

There are not many sports that you can play and learn together as a family. I am blessed to have two wonderful children and as they get older I can’t wait to introduce them to a game that has given me so much over the years.
