The course is the ultimate collaboration of Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish. It can be played from 5,200 to 7,200 yards, with fairways woven through dramatic rock outcroppings and the largest stand of Ponderosa pines in the country. The natural elevations and native vegetation enhance the strategic challenge of the hazards, with water coming into play on six holes. Best of all, the course continually frames the breath-taking splendour of the Rim country with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forest. Thanks to Payson's mild climate, avid golfers can enjoy year-round golf.

"Playability" is the hallmark of Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish Golf Course designs and it is the number one priority of The Rim Golf Club! According to Weiskopf-Morrish principles, a great course must be enjoyable for players of every level. Each hole must create a risk and challenge, and every hole should reward a well-planned and executed golf shot. True to their legacy, The Rim Golf Club is their final and ultimate collaboration! Mr. Weiskopf states "The twelve finest consecutive holes Jay and I ever designed are here at The Rim Club starting with hole number 7."

Chaparral Pines
The Rim Golf Membership comes with full golfing privileges at our sister club, The Golf Club at Chaparral Pines. Located directly across Highway 260, Chaparral Pines’ private championship golf course is an 18-hole, par-72 masterpiece designed by former U.S.

Open and PGA Champion David Graham and noted Scottsdale-based architect Gary Panks. It was named one of Golf Digest’s “Top 10 New Private Golf Courses in the U.S.” when it opened in 1997 and consistently ranks among the magazine’s best.

Spreading over the Mogollon Rim country of northern Arizona, the golf course features a variety of challenging holes, beautifully manicured fairways and breath-taking views of the majestic landscape – all of which exceed any golfer’s expectations. In addition, an assortment of intrinsic man-made lakes, streams and washes add to the serenity of the course.

Designed as a special escape among the pristine forest, Chaparral Pines also features year-round play. This signature 18-hole golf course is built with respect for the land, with natural topography inspiring the layout of each hole. Existing landmarks such as natural granite rock outcroppings have been left untouched.

The moment you drive through the gates at The Rim Golf Club you know you are in a special place. From the towering ponderosa pines to the elaborate 29,000 square foot clubhouse, you can tell that this place is different. The Rim Golf Club is a private golf course located in Payson, Arizona and recently opened a window for a limited public play at a rate of $120 from 10am to noon, $110 after noon. This opportunity is short lived and the Club will become totally private after August 31, 2011, once again. This is a golfing experience you do not want to miss so get your golf group together for an outstanding day of golf, on an unbelievably outstanding course, in mid 80s temps.

The Rim Golf Club is also one of the last collaborations of the renowned Tom Weiskopf-Jay Morrish design team, and sits just below the Mogollon Rim. This makes it a fantastic setting for golf and spending time in the high desert. According to Weiskopf, “The number one priority of The Rim Golf Club is playability. A great course must be enjoyable for players of every level. Each hole must create a risk and challenge, and every hole should reward a well-planned and executed golf shot.” Whether you are looking for a championship challenge or a recreational round of golf The Rim Golf Club is the perfect setting for either. Here are four holes that help to define this Top 100 golf course.

Hole 5:
This was one of my favorite holes at the Rim Club. The short par 4 is only 346 yards and is reachable for the longer players. However, sometimes caution is an important ingredient in a well-played hole. With a split fairway, a water hazard, and a daunting tree guarding the green, going for it may not be the wise play. For the conservative golfer a long iron or fairway wood up the right side will leave a good angle and short iron into this well designed hole.

Hole 9: This hole is one of the most visually demanding tee shots you will face at The Rim. Measuring 533 yards this is not the longest par 5, but it is one of the most exciting. The hole starts with an elevated tee shot that is played to a fairway guarded by water on the right and trees on the left. From there you can either go for the green or lay it up giving yourself a shorter club to attack this elevated and sloping green. A great risk reward par 5 to end the front nine. However, if your ball happens to find trouble and a large number ends up on your scorecard, you can always make yourself feel better with The Rim’s ‘Rim Chili’ at the turn!

Hole 12: Sometimes when we play golf courses we focus only on the risk reward holes and forget about the par 3’s. However, in a game that is constantly being defined by length this short par 3 definitely measures up. Playing 145 yards from the back tees, this picturesque hole features an elevated tee shot to a green framed by big pines and even bigger bunkers. With trouble lurking short, long, left and right it is easy to imagine your ball ending up somewhere other than the putting green.

Hole 18: This is a great finishing hole playing back towards the clubhouse. The green is slightly elevated with a pond on the right hand side. Accuracy off the tee is paramount if you are going to be able to control your ball into this green. At 454 yards this finishing hole will give you all you can handle as you finish your round.

“This exceptionally beautiful course has greens to die for! They were slick and putted so true it made all of us feel we were on the Tour! Best I’ve ever experienced in the high country for sure,” exclaimed Nancy Howard, Editor/Publisher of Arizona Golfer.

As for accolades it has been recognized as a Top 100 Modern Golf Course by Golfweek since 2009 and has also been ranked as the Number 1 Residential golf course in Arizona. However, the best accolade may be from Weiskopf who calls it simply the best of the 28 courses he and Morrish designed together in the United States. So if you are a fan of Weiskopf-Morrish designs, enjoy tree-lined fairways or are just looking for a respite from the heat, come up and play the The Rim Golf Club. Just make sure you take in the views from the patio of the clubhouse.
It’s definitely worth the short drive up to The Rim.
