More Information

I am writing this month’s column from the PGA National Coaching Summit and maybe the best quote I heard all week was from Michael Breed, host of the Golf Fix on the Golf Channel. Michael said, “The world would be a pretty boring place if there was only one flavor of ice cream!”

I think this is a great quote to relate to golf swings. So often I have students come to me and the first thing they say to me is, “Well, I know I am supposed to do this or supposed to do that”. The only thing you are supposed to do is make the ball go at your intended target and there are lots of ways to accomplish that!

Just like with ice cream flavors, everyone is different and has different capabilities. You need a golf swing that applies to your specific set of capabilities as it relates to physical conditioning, flexibility and practice time. Trying to contort your body into a position it physically cannot get into is a waste of time.

To that end, I try very hard with my students to make sure we are aware of any physical limitations or injuries they may have or had in the past. You would be amazed the effects long ago injuries can have on your current golf swing!

We also work closely with a Titleist Performance Institute certified fitness trainer to assess our students and make sure they are capable of certain base movements necessary to the golf swing. After gathering all of this information we can then build a swing movement that applies to each student individually and will help them reach their specific goals.

There is a ton of great information available about the golf swing from magazines, the internet, books and even your playing partners! The key however is to make sure the information is specific to you. If the things you are trying to do are not compatible with what you are capable of doing then you will end up frustrated, injured or both!

Make sure you are getting the flavor of ice cream that suits your taste buds and you will have a better chance at playing better golf!
