Mesa Country Club begins restoration of golf course

Rebirth of a Classic...

New life is being breathed into one of the Valley’s most iconic golf clubs and it’s bringing a robust new energy with it. Mesa Country Club has added more than 25 new members – most of them young up-and-coming professionals and families – since the first of the year and is now set to embark on an improvement project, which will restore the luster to its classic Billy Bell-designed golf course.

“This is our 65th anniversary, and we’re entering into an exciting new phase for Mesa Country Club,” said Bill Swirtz, Board President of the club. “We’ve got a great mix of longtime and new members. Our club facilities are outstanding and will soon get even better. But, what we hope never changes is the culture of our club. No one ever has to look very hard to
find a game, whether it’s on the golf course or in the card rooms. Friendships come easy here.”

For many years, Mesa has been a bit of a hidden gem. The club has a long history as one of the Valley’s premier golf and country clubs, and for decades it has attracted a great mix of East Valley business leaders. The excellent golf course, crafted by noted architect Billy Bell – designer of San Diego’s celebrated Torrey Pines South Course – is a classic design that is still relevant and able to challenge players today.

Mesa Country Club has enjoyed the luxury of an extremely supportive membership, but its leadership is well aware that the club must continue to adapt in order to remain competitive.

Understanding this, the club re-crafted its Equity membership to be more accessible and also adopted new Seasonal and Junior Membership categories, allowing younger individuals and snowbirds an affordable opportunity to make it a part of their lives. These changes – aided by numerous referrals from existing members – have accounted for much of the club’s recent growth.

Preparing for the future is a golf course improvement project, which begins in May, 2013. The goal of the extensive four-month project (scheduled for completion in late August) is to modernize some of the course infrastructure while returning its aesthetic and playing experience to the original Billy Bell design. This will include bunker work, a bit of greens re-shaping, and a conversion to a more contemporary Tiff-dwarf putting surface for the summer months.

Located along the borders of Tempe and Scottsdale in northwest Mesa near the intersection of the 101 and 202 Loops, Mesa Country Club is easily accessible from downtown Phoenix, Scottsdale, Arcadia or any city in the East Valley. Unique among its classic peers, Mesa Country Club skirts up and down the plateau from which the city of Mesa got its name, creating dramatic elevation changes throughout with deft twists and turns moving both right and left. Though just 6,800 yards, the golf course puts up a tremendous defense of par with subtle movements left and right and lightning fast greens.

In addition to golf, the club campus includes three dining options, six lighted tennis courts, a junior Olympic pool, spa, and golf practice facilities.
