J.T. Poston wins Southwestern Amateur at Desert Mountain

J.T. Poston of Western Carolina University won the 98th Southwestern Amateur June 21 at the Desert Mountain Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Poston, who opened with a 69 followed by a pair of 71s, shot a 65 in the final round for a total of 4 under par.

The soon-to-be junior, who is ranked No. 191 on Golfweek’s men’s college individual rankings, edged out defending champion Kevin Dougherty of Oklahoma State (ranked 90 on the Golfweek list) who shot 66 in the final round for 2 under par. He was runner-up in a scorecard playoff over Max MGreevy of the University of Oklahoma, who shot a 65 in the third round and a 72 in the final round.

The tournament was held June 17-21 on the Renegade Course. The full field of 144 players, including 31 from Arizona, came from 25 states, 77 colleges and universities, two community colleges and five high schools.

Desert Mountain will host the tournament through 2016.

The Southwestern Golf Association is a non-profit organization that supports the tournament and promotes golf in the Southwest.
