Julie McKenna of Springfield, Mass. captures 2013 EWGA National Championship Title at The Wigwam

The Wigwam Resort and Spa in Litchfield, Arizona hosted one of the largest women’s amateur golf competitions in the world, the 18th Annual EWGA Championship Finals, September 7 & 8, 2013.

Julie McKenna from Springfield, Mass. defeated a field of thirty-two women in the Championship Flight to claim the title as the Overall Champion of the 2013 EWGA Championship Finals.

Despite the inclement weather, McKenna posted a Final Gross Score of 146, 4 strokes better than her nearest competitor, to capture the victory. The former Wake Forest University and Western New England College School of Law alumna was ecstatic about her win.

McKenna, an attorney, is currently working at Egan, Flanagan, & Cohen P.C. located in the Greater Springfield, Massachusetts’ area. “When I started working at the law firm, I considered joining a private country club because golf has opened many doors for me in my business career. I decided to join the EWGA instead because it provided me with a great support system and the opportunity to meet and network with so many other successful businesswomen. Based on the contacts I’ve made and the experiences I’ve had so far, I know I have made the right choice.”

The 36-hole EWGA Championship Final consisted of 220 women amateur golfers who advanced beyond 117 local chapter qualifiers and 15 semi-final regional tournaments to advance to the Finals.  The final field represented 81 EWGA chapters in 39 states as well as Canada.

Competitors play in flights based on skill level determined by their USGA Handicap Index and the competition consists of two different formats: individual stroke play and team scramble.

The championship’s format encourages women of all skill levels to compete, underscoring the EWGA’s mantra to enhance the careers and lives of working women through golf.  More than 2,500 women nationwide entered the Championship Finals this year, which began in June.
