Local Shriners team up with The Cactus Tour

The 17th annual Shriners Golf Classic has teamed up with the young ladies from The Cactus Tour for a Pro Am tournament on April 26th at the Legacy Golf Resort.  This combination actually started last year and it was such a hit it will now be an annual event.

The El Zaribah Shriners have been a mainstay of the Phoenix community since 1896 and preside over all Shriners in Arizona from Interstate 8, North to the border, as well as all Shriners in Sonora, Mexico. Aside from wearing those “funny red hats”, participating in many parades and holding the annual Shrine Circus, Shriners are also known for fully supporting 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children throughout North America.

The proceeds from the Shriners Golf Classic will help with the upkeep of their local headquarters building. As Tournament Chairman, Tom Calvin says, “If we don’t have a building, we can’t take care of the kids”.

The Cactus Tour was created for professional women golfers as a place to play outside the LPGA and the Futures Tour and has evolved into not only a venue to improve their game, but as a place to prepare for events during the off time for amateur and professional golfers. Of the 12 young lady contestants on Big Break Florida, 7 of them are on The Cactus Tour.

This weekend that is “all about fun for a good cause” kicks off Friday evening, April 25th with a pre-tournament party aptly named the Bash Before The Clash. It is open to the public and includes live entertainment, food, raffles and auctions. $10 ticket lets you join in all the fun.

Also open to the public, men and women alike, Saturday morning, April 26th starts the Pro Am with 3 amateurs and one Cactus Tour Pro per team. This is an 8am Shotgun Start, Scramble tournament that again, is all about fun. An Awards Luncheon follows golf at the Legacy.
