Krick holds on to win Q-School Prep Event at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes

Shoots final-round 4-under to beat Jimmy Gunn by two shots

Jonathon Krick shot a final-round 4-under 68 and carded three birdies on the final nine holes to come out on top on the All-American Gateway Tour’s Q-School Prep Event held at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.

Krick started the final round at 9-under, one shot back of second-round leader Jimmy Gunn. Krick carded two birdies and one bogey on the front nine to make the turn at 10-under, while Gunn kept his foot on the gas with birdies on three of the first seven holes to get to 13-under before a bogey at the par-4 ninth hole dropped him back to 12-under as he made the turn.

Both players birdied the par-4 10th hole, but things turned quickly on Hole 13, where Krick knotted things at 12-under after he made birdie and Gunn recorded a bogey. Krick took a one shot lead at 13-under after his birdie on the par-5 16th, but Gunn quickly tied things up after his birdie on the par-3 17th.

Gunn then found trouble and made a costly double bogey on the finishing hole, while Krick eased in with a par to secure the two-shot win.

It’s no surprise that Krick pulled ahead on the final nine – for the tournament he was 13-under on the back nine with no bogeys.  Gunn held the lead after the first and second rounds, thanks in part to his blistering 9-under 63 in the first round. He couldn’t keep up that pace though, and finished 71-71 the last two days to finish solo second at 11-under par.

Jesse Mueller carded three birdies on the back nine to finish at 2-under for the day and 10-under for the tournament to finish solo third, while Eric Meierdierks and Jim Knous finished T4 at 9-under par. Meierdierks had an up-and-down rounding, carding nine birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey, while Knous birdied two of his last three holes to jump into the Top-5.
