Founder Team captures 11th Quintero Cactus Cup

Winning Founder team from the JGAA Quintero Cactus Cup

The Founder Team captured the 11th Annual Quintero Cactus Cup, 11½ to 8½ over the Charter Team. The Ryder Cup-style event featured Four-Ball and Foursome Match Play on Saturday and Singles Matches on Sunday.

The Quintero Cactus Cup is a competition of two 10-player teams – 5 boys and 5 girls on each team. Taking place at Quintero Golf and Country Club, April 30-May 1, the Founder Team, captained by Melanie Boyles and Erin Groeneveld, won the event for the 3rd consecutive year over the Charter Team, captained by Scott McNevin.

Saturday consisted of Foursome matches (modified Alternate Shot) in the morning, with Four-Ball matches in the afternoon. After the morning Foursome matches, the Founder and Charter Team were tied at 2½ points each. In the Foursome matches, the teams of Nick Hool/Shelby Phillips and Michael Anderson/Beau Bremer each earned a point for the Founder Team. While for the Charter Team, Cameron Palmer/Gabby Bautista and Zach Wright/Darian Spivey earned a point. The teams of Chris Felix/Katie Dunaway (Charter) and Brett Wilson/Melissa Olson (Founder) each earned a ½ point for their respective team.

In the afternoon Four-Ball matches the Founder team earned 3½ points to 1½ for the Charter Team. The Founder team had victories by Caston Roberts/Beau Bremmer, Brett Wilson/Shelby Phillips and Nick Hool/Dana Finkelstein. For the Charter Team, Zach Wright/Gabby Bautista earned a victory. Anthony Quezada/Katie Dunaway (Charter) and Michael Anderson/Melissa Olson (Founder) halved their match, each earning a ½ point.

With the Four-ball and Foursome matches completed, the Founder Team held a slight 6-4 edge going into Sunday’s Singles matches. The 2-point advantage proved to be tough for the Charter Team to comeback from, with the Founder Team earning 5½ points to the Charter’s 4½. For the third consecutive year, the Founder team won the prestigious Quintero Cactus Cup, 11½ to 8½.

In the Single’s matches, the Founder team had victories by Nick Hool, Beau Bremer, Melissa Olson, Shelby Phillips and Dana Finkelstein, with Brett Wilson earning a ½ point. The Charter team had victories by Zach Wright, Blake Cannon, Cameron Palmer, Darian Spivey, with Anthony Quezada earning a ½ point.
