Hope Arising’s Third Annual Golf Tournament at Seville Golf & Country Club benefits 60,000 people

Ethiopian woman joins local golfers to benefit water project in drought-striken Ethiopia

Local golfers are invited to support Hope Arising at the Third Annual Plaid Coat Classic hosted at Seville Golf & Country Club on Monday, September 12, 2011. The four-player scramble is an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start with a Mexican buffet following play. Contests include closest to the pin, longest drive and a hole in one for a car. Sponsorships and registrations are available at www.hopearising.org/golf.

The 21st century should not include people without water, and one local nonprofit organization is working to make this true for 60,000 people in Dera, Ethiopia. East Africa is currently raveged by drought and Hope Arising’s 20 mile waterline will change lives. It is a great honor to have Betelhem Mamo join us from Ethiopia at the golf tournament to share the impact this water will have.

When Hope Arising co-founders and Gilbert residents Rochelle Sellers and Chantal Carr first visited Dera, Ethiopia they were shocked at conditions. Over 200 children dropped out of school in search of water. Water cans sat empty for up to 10 days waiting for government water trucks to come and keep the people alive. The Imam said, “There is no water in Dera but there is water in America and you will be our water.” Thus began the construction of a 20 mile water pipeline – a three-year project scheduled for completion in October, 2011.
