Bear Creek Complex announces major changes and upgrades

Bear Creek Complex announced recently the completion of major changes and upgrades to their courses. After months of contacting their guests and asking for opinions on the facilities, they received lots of good, and some not so good, comments. Taking a long hard look at the guest comments they decided to make some major changes to their maintenance practices. The two main focuses were the greens and bunkers.

Over the past year, Bear Creek has replaced and redesigned all of their bunkers. Although the bunker isn’t a great spot to land, their new Toro bunker rakes make for a softer, cleaner fair-playing bunker to “escape” from.

The Complex hired an agronomist with the USGA to look at their turf conditions and determine how they could be improved. Based on his recommendations the overseeding process was changes this year and since re-opening they have received an overwhelming amount of compliments. In addition to the perennial ryegrass and poa trivialis seed that is normally used they added creeping bentgrass to the mix to give a smoother, fuller texture to the surface. Furthering their effort to make the greens smooth and true was the application of three times the amount of seed on the greens that has been applied in years past. Their guests have really noticed a difference in how the greens are playing.

In addition, new Toro greens and fairway mowers have drastically improved the quality and uniformity of cut on the grass. The result – the greens at Bear Creek are better than ever.

‘In a continuing attempt to provide you with the best product and golf value in the East Valley, our golf courses are better than ever this year. We have some new and improved golf course maintenance practices that we would like to share with all our guests,” stated PGA Teaching Professional Brian Calhoun.
